Pardon the Construction
If you’ve visited the Museum recently, you’ve likely seen some signs of construction. These undertakings are simply the first steps in a larger Transformation Project that will be completed in phases until the official unveiling. The re-imagined campus will be reminiscent of Ohio’s glacier-carved land and vital freshwater sources. The Museum has partnered with highly esteemed local architecture firm, DLR | Westlake Reed Leskosky to bring our vision to life.
Throughout the project, guests should expect ambient construction noise in these few areas of the building. Otherwise, we anticipate no interruptions to access public areas and no increased risk to guest safety. While the effects on the Museum guest experience during construction will be minimal, the impact of the finished project will be extraordinary. So, please bear with us as we work to transform the world of discovery.
Our first order of business is a complete makeover of the Thelma and Kent H. Smith Environmental Courtyard. Once complete, the courtyard’s reworked landscaping will reflect Northeast Ohio’s distinctive flora and hydrology, incorporating new walkway paths that will meander through native plant species. An event and program space equipped with a state-of-the-art sound system will be sculpted to resemble Northeast Ohio waterways. These flowing shapes will create a peaceful place where visitors can reflect upon their personal roles in natural history. You may have also noticed some changes in Murch Auditorium, which similarly begins renovation in late-January. Finally, we will be creating a new area dedicated to showcasing and discussing new developments in science and scientific research. These areas will open in December 2020 as a kickoff to the Museum’s Centennial Celebration.
In the following months and years, you’ll observe further signs of construction within our galleries. Behind the scenes, we’re transforming our labs and repositories to better accommodate the Museum’s research needs and extensive collections. And, we’re adding to our footprint with the addition of a brand-new exhibit wing and entrance hall. Renowned gallery design group, Gallagher & Associates, will help us ensure these spaces will accommodate the needs of our organization and community, alike.
Our visitors will enjoy an enhanced Museum experience while learning about our world-class specimens. And, our on-staff experts will be better equipped than ever to conduct the type of groundbreaking research we’re known for. All told, the Transformation Project will serve to strengthen the Museum’s position as a global authority on science and nature.
The vision of the Museum’s bold and innovative Transformation Project relies on the generosity of community leaders. Pledges can be made over a period of years and every effort will be made to structure each pledge to fit the donor’s needs.
