A Message of Solidarity
Dear Community,
The Cleveland Museum of Natural History stands behind those fighting for justice and equality, and we are ready to listen, learn, and honor the importance of recent events.
As a science-based organization celebrating the natural world, we appreciate and advocate for the diversity of life on this planet. We actively work to communicate that nature is of and for everyone, regardless of race, age, economic status, or any other characteristic. In nature’s eyes, we are all one.
Our institution has worked to build a safe and welcoming place for our community to learn about science and nature. Last fall, we welcomed renowned biological anthropologist Dr. Robin Nelson as a guest speaker during our Explorer Lecture Series. That evening, a memorable, important, and illuminating discussion took place as Dr. Nelson spoke on “The Race Prism: How History and Bad Science Shape Our Ideas About Family and Community.” For those who missed it, you may view a pre-lecture interview here.
Earlier this year, our team tackled similar topics during diversity-and-inclusion training presented by Third Space Action Lab. I am proud of our staff members who applied their learning to current events and are using their voices to effect change within our community. The Museum is also redoubling our commitment to promoting diversity within our ranks. But these measures are just the start. There is still work to be done.
The Cleveland Museum of Natural History commits to continuing these important discussions. We will continue to bring thought leaders to our institution to address issues of diversity and inclusion. We also encourage you to do whatever you can to listen and to learn from one another. Thousands of years of evolution have taught us that humans, as a species, succeed when we work together for a common cause. And we can think of no better cause than this.
Yours in solidarity,
Cleveland Museum of Natural History
