Gravitational Waves Observed for First Time
For the first time, scientists have observed ripples in the fabric of space-time called gravitational waves, arriving at the Earth after a violent collision of two black holes 1.3 billion years ago. This confirms a major prediction of Albert Einstein’s 1915 general theory of relativity and opens an unprecedented new window into the cosmos.
Cleveland Museum of Natural History Executive Director & CEO Dr. Evalyn Gates, an astrophysicist herself, expressed her excitement and knowledge in an impromptu Q&A session with Museum staff this morning. Watch an interview with Dr. Gates to learn more about this exciting announcement.
