Mentor Marsh Restoration Praised
The Museum’s restoration efforts at Mentor Marsh made headlines this week. The Plain Dealer published a front-page story offering a positive look at the natural habitat restoration underway at Mentor Marsh, a state nature preserve managed by the Museum. The Museum’s Natural Areas Division staff were among a team of partners, including The Nature Conservancy, Ohio Environmental Council and Western Reserve Land Conservancy, that hosted U.S. Rep. Dave Joyce for a tour of the marsh to show the successful impact of federal funding through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. The funding supported restoration efforts to control invasive vegetation to help the marsh return to its natural state teeming with vibrant biodiversity. Curator of Botany and Director of Natural Areas Jim Bissell was credited for initiating the marsh restoration years ago and quoted as being one of the heroes that made it happen.
