Museum Weathers Storm to Talk Wildlife in Winter
As snow and wind sent a chill throughout Northeast Ohio, Museum Director of Wildlife Resources Harvey Webster stopped by ideastream to talk with Dan Polletta about the importance of the Winter Solstice in nature.
“It’s kind of like a reset button in nature,” explains Webster. “You’ve had this steady progression of ever shortening days leading up to December 21. After that date the days start to get a little longer. This notion of day length is hardwired into all of us and it is how many organisms reset their internal calendar.”
Webster and Polletta talked about native Ohio wildlife and how local animals, such as those that appear in our own Ralph Perkins II Wildlife Center & Woods Garden – Presented by KeyBank, take cues from changing periods of day length to adapt to coming winter weather.
