Women in Science Day 2021

Virtual Lineup for Women in Science Day 2021

The Cleveland Museum of Natural History is proud to host a virtual celebration of Women in Science. During the week of February 8, 2021, the Museum will present programs to celebrate science-minded women and all that’s been accomplished in overcoming adversity.

“It has never been more important to encourage women of all ages to explore STEM careers and embrace their love for science,” says Dr. Denise Su, the Museum’s Chief Academic Engagement Officer and renowned expert in paleoecological reconstruction. “And it’s never too early to get involved with community science and get in touch with your inner scientist. After all, you don’t have to be a scientist to ‘be a scientist.’ We are all naturally curious and should feel empowered to nurture this curiosity in all areas of our lives.”

The Museum invites the community to have breakfast with a scientist in the morning, and join Career Conversations in the afternoon. Visit “Office Hours,” a special virtual room that will be available at selected times during the day for guests to pop in and ask questions individually. Or join the “Lights, Camera, Science!” room, where the Museum will be showcasing staff-favorite highlights from lab tours, field excursions, and specimen spotlights. Programs are available for all ages.

“Our goal is to encourage more girls and young women to study science and pursue careers in scientific fields,” said Dr. Su, who has been instrumental in the creation, coordination, and implementation of the Museum’s Women in Science Day celebrations. “Our talented panelists will share stories of working in STEM, how they became interested in science, and their journeys to the top of their fields.”

The highly anticipated event, which is typically held in person, was cancelled last year due to the pandemic. Though the Museum continues its moratorium on in-person events, it has adapted this year’s celebration for the digital sphere. Sponsors of this event include Acroment Technologies, Great Lakes Cheese, Friends of CMNH, and EnviroScience.

The Museum will offer unlimited access to programs during Women in Science Day for a flat rate of $10 for nonmembers and $8 for members.
