Balto’s Journey Home
The Museum’s iconic Balto specimen will soon receive a fitting hero’s welcome during a brief homecoming visit.
Balto — one of the hero dogs of the 1925 diphtheria serum run — will be on temporary exhibit at the Anchorage Museum in his original home state of Alaska. The Balto display will be part of a larger exhibit called Polar Bear Garden: The Place Between Alaska and Russia — which celebrates the land, history and culture of Alaska during the 150th anniversary of the United States’ purchase of the territory from Russia.
Balto’s last day on display here at the Museum before the trip will be Sunday, March 5. The Museum is hosting a Balto Reader's Theater at 10:30am on Friday March 3 and its annual “Ikidarod” event in Smead Discovery Center on Saturday March 4 as part of his send-off. Balto will return to Cleveland in June and will shortly thereafter be returned on display at the Museum.
