Each volume of Hough’s American Woods contains 25-26 types of wood. Hough developed a specialized wood-cutting machine, which he patented in 1886. Transverse, radial and tangential sections of each wood specimen are included, along with their scientific and common names—in German, Spanish and French, as well as English. The volumes also contain booklets with “copious explanatory text” about the specimens.
