Louis Agassiz (1807-1873) was a Swiss-born American naturalist, geologist and teacher who made groundbreaking contributions to the study of natural science. His landmark work on the fossil fishes of Europe appeared in parts from 1833 to 1843. In these magnificently illustrated volumes, Agassiz raised the number of known fossil fishes to more than 1,700, and he made the ancient seas come to life with descriptions of their inhabitants.
