DNA Laboratory

The generation and analysis of DNA sequence data revolutionized the field of phylogenetic and evolutionary research by providing an additional source of data beyond traditional morphology based analysis. DNA allowed researchers to test hypotheses regarding evolutionary relationships, biogeographic origins, population or species level structure and much more. The Museum’s DNA Lab is dedicated to this data generation and serves as the central hub for DNA-based research across multiple departments within the Museum. In addition, the facility serves as a center to train high school, undergraduate and graduate students in molecular methods. The facility also hosts education programming offered through the Museum’s Education Division.

The Museum’s DNA Lab is a fully functioning molecular lab with seven dedicated workspaces and three dedicated computer/microscope work areas. The lab is equipped with 2 Eppendorf Thermocyclers, 2 Eppendorf centrifuges, incubators, water baths, pure water system, fume hood, -20 and -80 ultra-cold freezers, gel electrophoresis, UV cross-linker, Leica dissecting microscope and typical bench work equipment. The facility is used by the curatorial staff at the Museum and their departments for ultra-cold storage of biological specimens, DNA extraction, PCR amplification, template processing, DNA analysis, microscopy needs, data storage and server functionality.
