Trout Club

Promoting knowledge of coldwater fisheries, fish habitat, conservation, and stream ecology

A Special Message from the Trout Club President

As everyone is adjusting to the current COVID-19 situation, please know that we are committed to maintaining the Trout Club’s mission and keeping the Club moving forward. We plan to be back and functioning 100% as soon as conditions permit. In the short term, our focus is:

  • Ensuring we continue to add value to our members and are working with the Museum to safely get events/outings/programs started again once social distancing relaxes
  • Continuing to work on conservation projects we have pledged to support and are identifying new projects that we can support for a lasting impact
  • Working on strategic-plan results from our session earlier this month and continuing to develop a plan and push it out to members
    • As a part of this, we are working on a succession plan, how to add events to the calendar this summer/fall to make up for missed opportunities this spring due to circumstances outside our control, and add value to our membership.
As always, please be sure to check the Trout Club webpage for information updates regarding upcoming events and outings.

Please connect with us on Instagram and YouTube!

Protecting Ohio's Brook Trout

The Trout Club has taken a leading role in the protection and potential restoration of Ohio’s native brook trout. This distinct genetic strain of trout is unique to a small corridor that runs from West Virginia through Ohio and into southern Ontario. The Ohio population is severely threatened due to habitat loss resulting from development and climate issues.

The Trout Club created a video that presents the current status of brook trout in Ohio based on studies by the Ohio Division of Wildlife. This presentation is followed by a historical review of the extensive work conducted by Terry Harmon at University School with Northeast Ohio brook trout. The success of this work may provide a solution to the challenges facing brook trout in Ohio.

The goal of the video is to raise awareness and encourage all members of the outdoor-focused public, not just fishermen, to help preserve a part of Ohio's natural heritage.
