Strong, yet graceful structural elements create a powerful new presence on Wade Oval.
A striking new front entrance incorporates baffles into the enormous windows shielding the Museum from solar gain and overheating, while providing natural light throughout the lobby. The existing Shafran Planetarium is uniquely incorporated into the design.
The Dinosaur Window, which frames a view into the new dinosaur exhibit gallery, invites the public to see into the exciting world of science.
The journey to science begins in the lobby. Wood and stone materials elegantly reflect the natural world around us. At the rear of the lobby, visitors will enter the new Thelma and Kent Smith Courtyard.
From the lobby, visitors start their journey through time with an exploration of the world around us in the new Living Planet exhibit and galleries wing.
The new Perkins Wildlife Center is a living collection of native Ohio plants and animals within a wood-like setting on the south side of the Museum. An elevated Canopy Walk will traverse the hillside to offer unexpected animal encounters and landscapes to explore Ohio’s rich natural diversity.
Visitors will be able to enter through a new aviary encountering native birds from the ground to the treetops.
A series of aerial trailways create fascinating views of the Museum’s bobcats, foxes and raccoons as they move above and around visitors.
A clear acrylic walkway takes visitors through the middle of the wetlands as they approach the otter habitat.
The enlarged otter habitat gives visitors unprecedented opportunities to interact with these playful, aquatic mammals and includes an educational amphitheater for public programs.
